Brief: A modern country garden design in Davenham, Cheshire.

Tasked with connecting an existing small courtyard at the rear of a beautiful period property with a recently acquired extension to the curtilage, we designed a garden that dissolves former boundaries, opening the space up into an elegant and expansive modern country garden. The concept provides a seamless transition from an intimate foreground, opening up to reveal the field beyond and perfectly balancing private outdoor living spaces with ethereal, flowing meadows and meandering pathways.

The journey begins at the outdoor living room, where a staggered natural stone patio offers a sun-drenched space for relaxation. From here, stone steps lead up to a raised stone terrace featuring an outdoor kitchen and dining space beneath a louvred pergola. Gravel pathways guide the user toward the wider landscape or through the estate fencing to the new barn-style garage and contemporary garden office, which boasts its own terrace paved in beautiful limestone pitchers.

At the heart of the design, a tranquil water feature serves as a sensory centrepiece. At the top of the garden, a Corten steel pond provides a welcoming habitat for wildlife. Spilling over the edge and into a steel rill, water trickles down into another weathered steel pond, beautifully framed by bespoke, curved dry-stone benches. Carefully placed sculptures provide focal points throughout the grounds.

Organically shaped borders filled with naturalistic planting provide seasonal interest and rich texture, whilst wildflower meadows deliver vibrant summer blooms and ample food for pollinators.

We can’t wait to see this vision come to life.
